Aqueous ammonia for emissions control in New York power plants
The Hydra-Cell F-20 pump has been engineered into NOx (nitrogen oxide) emission control systems for power plants in the New York area. In an effort to reduce air pollution, the Environmental Pollution Agency (EPA) mandates the maximum allowable levels of NOx that companies can put into the air. NOx is produced by any power plant that burns coal, natural gas or solid waste. The conditioning of the emitted gas can be done during combustion, after combustion, or sometimes both depending on how much NOx reduction is required.
During fuel combustion NOx emissions can be reduced by spraying aqueous ammonia into the combustion zone of the furnace. The result is a very high temperature chemical reaction that reduces NOx levels. This process is referred to as SNCR (selective non-catalytic reduction).
After combustion, the aqueous ammonia can be injected into the exhaust gas of the furnace. This process involves using a catalyst in a honeycomb configuration within the gas duct. The aqueous ammonia is sprayed directly into the flue gas (thereby conditioning it) but must evaporate completely before reaching the catalyst. This type of "scrubbing" is referred to as SCR (selective catalytic reduction). The spray geometry is critical as the droplets need to be fine enough to allow for complete evaporation. If the droplets impinge on the catalyst, it will result in deposits and binding of the catalyst, preventing it from reacting with the gas.
Any industry that burns fuel as a part of its production process must comply with EPA regulations. Examples are power plants, steel mills, foundries, co-generation plants, hazardous and municipal waste incineration, as well as other industrial combustion processes.
Leaking aqueous ammonia (usually 18-28% ammonia in water) is strictly prohibited so the seal-less design of the Hydra-Cell pump is a major benefit. The F-20 pumps were also chosen for their consistent delivery - strict control of flow and pressure is necessary to produce uniform droplets for predictable evaporation and maximized NOx reduction.
