Cyanide injection system for metal recovery at gold mine
A mining company in Colorado, USA chose Hydra-Cell H-25 pumps for an environmentally sensitive pumping operation that required a safe and reliable injection system for gold metal recovery. Hydra-Cell’s seal-less technology was a great advantage for a mining operation that regarded environmental concerns as a top priority. Previous seal failures had resulted in dangerous emissions, time consuming repairs and the loss of production.
For this application, a solution consisting of 71% water, 25% cyanide and 4% caustic was to be delivered precisely into a high volume water stream. The resulting 2% cyanide solution was then pumped over layers of crushed ore, allowing the gold metal in the ore to leach into solution and be collected for further processing.
The cyanide is re-concentrated and re-used. The H-25 pump is able to handle the reclaimed concentrate and meter it accurately into the water stream. Controlled by a variable frequency drive, the pump matches any required delivery between - in this case - 2 gpm and 10 gpm at 290 psi (8 l/min and 38 l/min at 20 bar).
The operation has proved safe, accurate and reliable. Two of these systems are now on site and the mining facility is looking to apply Hydra-Cell seal-less technology in other environmentally sensitive applications.
